"Corridors" (A Concerto for Orchestra) by Mark Wolfram is a contemporary concert work which was featured on Mark's 2000 Wrightwood Records CD release "Piercing The Celluloid Veil" featuring the Sinfonia of London and the Hollywood Studio Symphony.
The work is a tour-de-force for the orchestra, with many highlighted solos and section solis. The mood is dark and angular, yet there remains a tone of hopefulness throughout. Several contrasting sections of the work are connected with contrary-motion ascending and descending chromatic scales (the "corridors").
After a sparse and eerie introduction, the pace increases as the orchestration builds to the main theme where a jaunty triple-meter tempo is established, consisting of a combination of serial and other contemporary compositional techniques. The energy of the theme is followed by a vast yet transparent string choir offset by a solo French horn obligato. After much development the theme returns with a fuller orchestration - followed by an energetic coda featuring unison string figures, dovetailing among the other sections of the orchestra - and capped off with a final resounding motiv.
