"Sailor"
was composed by Marilyn Harris for New York French hornist John Clarke and features French horn and piano.
While presenting the introspective feel of an anthem, it actually has a nice consistent groove throughout much of the piece. The piano establishes the tone and tempo using multi-meters with
subtle syncopated rhythms. The French horn
part has many lyrical, yet angular phrases and a few challenging jumps. The piece's use of syncopation, range and harmonic surprise make it very enjoyable for both performers and listeners.
"Sailor" is a GRADE 4 French
horn solo and highlights the performer's clear tone, mastery of large intervallic
jumps, varied articulations, syncopated rhythms and contrasting
dynamics. While notated in the classical style, it implies jazz
rhythms and tone. The duration is approximately 2-1/2
minutes.
A solo French horn part and piano score
are included. Available only through this website from Sound
Studio Publications.
