Mark Wolfram's "Terra Incognito" (for Concert Band) was written for Dr. Amy Roisum Foley, the director of concert bands at Minnesota State University Mankato.
Terra Incognito (Latin for "Land of the Unknown") is a term used in map-making
for regions that have not yet been explored or documented. Early cartographers labeled such regions with "Here Be Dragons." Although cartographers claimed that fantastical beasts (including large serpents) existed in remote corners of the world and depicted such as decoration on their maps, there exists only one known surviving map actually saying "HIC SVNT DRACONES" (Latin for "Here Are Dragons"). However, ancient Roman and Medieval cartographers did use the phrase HIC SVNT LEONES (Here Are Lions) when denoting unknown territories on maps. Alternatively, 'terra incognita' may also refer to the hypothesized continent Terra Australis Incognita ("The unknown land of the South").
During the 19th century, terra incognita disappeared from maps as both the coastlines and the inner parts of the continents became fully explored. However, the bottoms of oceans remain mostly unmapped, as do many other land surfaces in our solar system. The phrase is now used metaphorically to describe any unexplored subject or field of research.
This musical version of "Terra Incognito" doesn't focus so much on the mythical - but rather on enjoying the unknown journey. The work exemplifies the mystery and majesty of exploration and the composition was completed the first day of the lunar "Year Of The Dragon". It is a GRADE 5 composition which has a duration of approximately 5:43.
