"Fast Falls The Eventide" (for Concert Band) by Mark Wolfram was written for Dr. Timothy Mahr and the St. Olaf Concert Band in commemoration of Dr. Mahr's 20th year as director of the St. Olaf Bands. Dr. Mahr and the St. Olaf Band premiered the work March 8, 2016 at the Boe Memorial Chapel on the campus of St. Olaf in Northfield, Minnesota. Here is a link to the performance - the piece starts at 10:00 into the program: ST. OLAF BAND. The composition features unusual treatments of 14 familiar hymn tunes as the composer explores 3 areas of theology: Doubt vs. Discovery, Reason vs. Religion, and The Journey to Faith. This is not a mundane recitation of the hymnal, but an adventurous exploration of faith through music - with plenty of compositional and performance "meat on the bone."
"Fast Falls The Eventide" is a GRADE 5 band composition which highlights 14 familiar hymn tunes, unusual phrasing and harmonization, rich sonorities, tempo and mood changes, many step-out solos and multiple meters. A thoughtful exploration - entertaining and satisfying to both the band and audience alike. The duration is approximately 10:00.
